History of Parkview

HISTORY OF PARKVIEW

In 1948, God providentially brought two ladies together on a train bound for Chicago. For two years these ladies talked together, hoped together, and prayed together. In 1950, a prayer group was formed, and from that small group "Tinley Park Church of Christ" was born.

An enthusiastic group of 30 met for the first worship service on April 15, 1951 in a "storefront" on Oak Park Avenue. TPCC was able to purchase the Zion Lutheran building, and on February 13, 1955, they moved into their own building. In 1974, a decision was made to sell that building and relocate as they had outgrown the facility.

So after 22 years on Oak Park Avenue, the building at 16250 South 84th Avenue was built, and the congregation moved in on October 2, 1977. Then, on June 4, 1990, the church voted to change the name of "Tinley Park Church of Christ" to "Tinley Park Christian Church," thus clearing up some confusion in the community.

In 1989, we were running around 150 in attendance, and there has been steady growth since that time. We added a second service and then a third on Sunday mornings. By the year 2000, we were running around 500 in worship attendance, and we continued growing at that pace. With loving, caring, and committed people involved in a myriad of ministries, our only limitation was space.

Back in 1997, when we were running around 330 in attendance, we decided that we needed to relocate. We hired a consultant and did a major financial campaign to raise money toward the project. We had a top goal of raising $750,000 over the next three year period. Pledges came in at over $1,000,000 - which reflected an almost doubling of our giving at that time.

We had been looking for property for 5 years and could not find what we were looking for. As God saw our seriousness through the finances, He led us to the corner of 183rd and Wolf Rd. The Village of Orland loved the idea and helped us develop a plan. We bought 12 acres with an option of 6 more for later. With the announcement of the state's involvement in the development of 183rd St, the property value has greatly increased and plans for ministry have been enhanced.

Through God's grace and blessings, and through the commitment and dedication of our people, we completed Phase I of our building plan and moved into our current location in the fall of 2002. We are located on the corner of 2 major roads, across from a new Jewel/Osco, down the sidewalk from Walgreens and Blockbuster, and in the middle of a great deal of development and new homes. We have been provided a great mission field, with thousands of people just waiting to hear the living message of our risen Savior.

We weren't in the new building for very long before we realized that we needed to embark on Phase II immediately. Outreach Magazine rated Parkview as one of the 100 fastest growing churches in America for two years in a row, and we were soon averaging 2,700 people in 5 weekend services!

Phase II of our long-range plans, an $8.7 million, 84,000 square foot addition with a Worship Center that seats 1,700 people in one service, opened in March, 2006.

As God has continued to bless, we now find ourselves in the midst of The Great Investment, which launched in Spring of 2008.  The Great Investment campaign includes projects like improved space for children and teens, a missions emphasis that will reach people for Christ locally, nationally, and globally, and a Chapel fitting of life's most sacred occasions.

Several Great Investment projects have already been completed...the launch of Parkview's Lockport Campus, relocation of the Orland Campus staff to new upstairs admin space, additional parking was added at the Orland Park Campus, Children's Ministries space was completed on the first floor of the Orland Campus, and THE UNDERGROUND for Student Ministries and adult classes was also launched at the Orland Park Campus.

As of early 2010, Parkview is serving 6,000+ people during six weekend services at the Orland Park and Lockport Campuses!
