    Africa Trip (March, 2007)

Did you see the movie "Planes Trains, and Automobiles?"

We were to fly out last Wednesday (3/21/07) at 4 PM from O’Hare and connect in Detroit with the other members of our team to get to Amsterdam – and then on to Nairobi.

But there were thunderstorms and we were delayed 3 hours –which meant we missed the connection to Amsterdam. Of course that was the only flight leaving that day, so we had to spend exactly 24 hours in Detroit.

Now it wasn’t as bad as John Candy and Steve Martin in the above mentioned movie – at least we found separate beds! And I got to see my cousin’s new church building in Detroit. But we were only going to have 5 days in Africa as it was, and now we were down to 4.

As a church, we are going to spend a few weeks in early June talking about how we need to be taking care of the children of the world and I will spend more time talking about my trip and how we can get involved.

I got to actually chase a Zebra and a Thompson Gazelle in the wild just a few miles from where we were staying at an Aids clinic. (Check out the photo gallery for some awesome pictures!)

We spent a few hours in the Nairobi Game Park which is a Jurassic Park kind of deal where you get to just drive around in your own vehicle…wherever you want to go. I was with a crazy missionary in a 4 wheel drive so we actually went out and played chicken with a Rhino – there were no fences. We drove along with the giraffes and saw ostrich and water buffalo and baboons. This is a highly recommended experience!

But we spent most of our time going to the slums of Nairobi – where 70% of the population lives without electricity or toilet facilities of any kind.

Kibera is where Barak Obama visited. There are 1 million people living in 1 square mile and 40% OF THEM HAVE AIDS. While there, we went to an orphanage that we are connected with. They take care of those children orphaned by AIDS.

And then we traveled 4 hours out to the bush country to see the Massai. They are the jumping people. Polygamy, female circumcision, and AIDS are rampant and they are all going to die without Jesus and the church.

    We have a clinic there.

In a Massai hut made out of cow manure, I got to drink tea with a real Massai woman. Then we saw the river where they get the water and we were thankful that it was hot tea and prayed that God had boiled the junk out of it.

Probably – as I now see it now, God wasn’t sure I needed 5 days of that. One day was enough – honestly.

We will be involved. We have to be involved. I’ll show you how in a couple of months.
